Free induction decay (FID) refers to a short-lived sinusoidal electromagnetic signal which appears immediately following the 90° pulse. It is induced in the receiver coil by the rotating component of the magnetization vector in the x-y plane which crosses the coil loops perpendicularly. The signal we detect is called a Free Induction Decay (FID). The FID is produced by the macroscopic magnetization after the pulse. The magnetization will undergo several processes as it returns to equilibrium. Two kinds of NMR signal are generally used in MRI: free induction decay (FID) and spin echo. FID is elicited by a single RF pulse (e.g., 90 degrees) (Figure 3-1).
